Freedom of Expression

History, Context, and Opportunities

About the Session

The purpose of this session is to explore issues of freedom of speech and expression at Appalachian State University. Through a brief examination of the local (UNC Policy 1300.8), historical, and legal underpinnings of the topic participants will deepen their knowledge of what it means to be a staff member at a public university in the UNC system with an open campus. Participants will also participate in a brief case study where they will engage in a lively discussion with other participants as they explore how issues of free speech impact students, faculty, and staff at our institution. Subtopics, such as demonstrations and protests, offensive speech, and threats will be explored. The presenters will also provide examples of cases decided by the higher courts that have shaped free speech on and off-campus.
