Getting to Know More People in Student Affairs Series

In continuing with our Getting to Know More People in SA Series, this month we are highlighting Ms. Margaret Bumgarner, Administrative Director of Student Health Services. Enjoy reading about who makes up the Division of Student Affairs at Appalachian State University!

Hello! I am Margaret Bumgarner, Administrative Director for the MS Shook Student Health Service. The Administrative part of the title reflects the fact that we have a medical director who is a physician and provides oversight for clinical care provided by our clinic.

I have spent the bulk of my career in all aspects of health care. Beginning as a phlebotomist and then as a laboratory medical technologist. After completing my masters, I worked in medical staff leadership and quality assurance. My experience includes all inpatient and outpatient settings and payment models.

I love being in different locations and experiencing different cultures. My love of beautiful locales and opportunity to add additional tools to my healthcare toolbox, has largely driven my job choices. I grew up in Asheville, NC and have lived in both Whitefish, Montana and Lihue, Hawaii. Boone fits right into that group!

I spend a lot of spare time with my four companion pets; three cats and a rabbit. Yes, just a cat short of being a crazy cat lady! The rabbit was my COVID adoption and in retrospect, a dubious choice. Cooking and gardening are both fun for me. Outside of home, I prefer to hike and fly fish, again all with more enthusiasm than skill.

If we haven’t met in person and there are likely several who I only know from a 3x4 inch zoom picture, please reach out and let’s get to know each other.
