Know Yourself: Understanding the Diverse Lenses Through which we See and Interact with AppState Students
About the Session
The purpose of this workshop is to facilitate an opportunity for student affairs professionals to take a closer look at our own intersecting identities and those of the students with whom we
work. Because our intersecting identities and personal/family backgrounds create the lenses through which we see the world and the students we serve, it is imperative that we are aware of our lenses and possible blind spots. We cannot change what we do not notice.
Session I, Attic Window, 137C

1. Participants will be more aware of their own lenses/identities and understand more fully how these lenses inform their work with diverse students.
2. Participants will be able to articulate ways in which a person’s background may lead to unrecognized or unacknowledged stereotypes.
3. Participants will identify at least one action step they can implement in their current role as a student affairs professional to interact with students in a more culturally competent way.
