The Division of Student Affairs is please to welcome several new employees this summer. Coordinator for Sports and Activities
University Recreation is pleased to announce Turner Goa as their new Coordinator for Sports and Activities. He will be responsible for working with the Sports & Activities program as they hire 150+ students to work with intramural and club sports. He will also assist with the summer UREC Camp for 2020.
Turner started on Monday, July 1st so please welcome him to the Student Affairs family!
Coordinator for Challenge Course & Climbing Wall
University Recreation is pleased to welcome Robert "Bob" Riddle as the new Coordinator for Challenge Course & Climbing Wall. He will be working with the Outdoor Adventure program as they hire 60+students to work in the climbing wall, outing center, challenge course and trips.
Bob started on Monday, July 1st so please welcome him to the Student Affairs family!
Associate Director of Student Conduct
Josh Cutchens has been hired as the new Associate Director of Student Conduct. He will be responsible for all case management in the student conduct system, which includes academic integrity cases and non-academic misconduct. He will also supervise the Assistant Directors, advise the University Conduct Board, facilitate training on behalf of the Office of Student Conduct and work on assessment initiatives.
Josh joins us from the University of South Florida and began here at Appalachian on July 1st.

Nurse Practitioner, M.S. Shook Student Health Services
Student Health Services would like to welcome Jerica Smith as the newest Family Nurse Practitioner. She joins their provider team, treating and counseling students for Student Health Services.
Jerica formerly practiced at Appalachian Regional in a busy family practice clinic.
Administrative Associate, M.S. Shook Student Health Services
Student Health Services is pleased to welcome Lindsay Hannon and the Administrative Associate. She will be serving in an administrative capacity for all aspects of Student Health. She will be particularly working with students as they navigate the Student Blue and waiver process.
Lindsay joins us from a local, busy chiropractic clinic.
Medical Technologist, M.S. Shook Student Health Services
Jennifer Cochran joined Student Health Services in December as a Medical Technologist in the laboratory. She has agreed to accept the supervisor position. Jennifer has over 20 years of experience in clinical laboratory science.
Staff Counselor, Coordinator of Multicultural Services
The Counseling and Psychological Services Center is excited to welcome Gayatri Titus as the new Staff Counselor and Coordinator of Multicultural Services.
Gayatri earned her doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy from Texas Tech University and comes to us from Cone Health in Greensboro, NC.
Gayatri started in her new role on June 3rd!
Staff Psychologist, Coordinator of Student Athlete Services
The Counseling and Psychological Services Center is pleased to welcome Jacob Cooper and the new Staff Psychologist and Coordinator of Student Athlete Services.
Jacob earned his doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Boston University and is coming to us from his doctoral internship at the Asheville VA Medical Center.
Jacob will began on August 5th.
Post-Doctoral Resident and Doctoral Interns
The following Post-Doctoral Resident and Doctoral Interns started in the Counseling and Psychological Services Center in August.
Nicole DeFerrarri is our Post-Doctoral Resident. Nicole earned her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Chatham University and is coming to us from her doctoral internship at Florida State University Counseling Center. She started her position on August 5.
Jenna Tomalski is one of our Doctoral Interns. Jenna is completing her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of North Texas. She started her position on August 1.
Kelly Hughes is another one of our Doctoral Interns. Kelly is completing her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Auburn University. She started her position on August 1.
Matt Perlman is also a Doctoral Intern. Matt is completing his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Ohio University. He started his position on August 1.
Associate Director of Leadership Education and Development
Courtney Holder is the new Associate Director of Leadership Education and Development in the Department of Student Engagement & Leadership.
Courtney will lead the Leadership Development Foundation, as part of our department leadership team, and as Director of the Leadership Studies Minor.
She is coming to us from University of Maryland, College Park.
Assistant Director for Leadership Development
Juan Menizabel has accepted the position as Assistant Director for Leadership Development in the Department of Student Engagement & Leadership.
Juan will both lead the expanded Trailhead efforts and will facilitate/advise other leadership development programs. He will also teach in the Leadership Studies Minor.
Juan comes to us from Florida State University.
Associate Director for ACT
Heather Jo Mashburn is the new Associate Director for ACT (Appalachian and the Community Together).
She is coming from the Office of Student Conduct. Heather Jo will lead the student affairs staff team in ACT Foundation, as a part of the department leadership team and will serve as lead on outreach to Community Partners.
Heather Jo has already started in the ACT Office so go by and say hello!
Coordinator of Campus Activities
The Department of Student Engagement & Leadership is excited to welcome Emily Dabau as the Coordinator of Campus Activities.
Emily has been working as a graduate assistant for the past two years and has accepted a one year appointment in this position. She will be working with Sustained Dialogue, Intersect, and CASE as well as other Campus Activities initiatives.
Assistant Director of Multicultural Student Development
Jerisha Farrer is the new Assistant Director of Multicultural Student Development.
She will assist in the oversight of campus-wide diversity, social justice, and inclusive excellence programming and training. Jerisha will coordinate the ASCEND supplemental orientation program and INTERSECT Social Justice Retreat. In addition, she will supervise and support one Coordinator and three Graduate Assistants that serves in the Henderson-Springs LGBTQIA+ Center, Women’s Center and the MCC. She will serve as the advisor to the Black Student Association and the program liaison to Fraternity/Sorority Life- NPHC and Multicultural Greek Life. She will also serve on committees across Student Affairs and campus to promote and increase best practices and needs of Higher Education.
Jerisha came to us from Auburn University located in Auburn, Alabama where she served in dual positions as a Graduate Research Assistant for the Biggio Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning and Learning Success Coordinator for the Office of Inclusion and Diversity- Student Excellence Team. Farrer started on Monday, May 20th.
Student Services Coordinator, MSD
Barbara Armstrong is the new Student Services Coordinator for Multicultural Student Development. She comes to us from a background of tourism, non-profit, and community service. She has a passion to serve and work with others.
Her last positions were with the Caldwell Chamber of Commerce and the Boone Chamber of Commerce. She has served on several non-profit Boards of Directors, Tourism and Development Boards, and the Advisory Board for Highlands Union Bank.
Building & Environmental Services Technician, University Housing
University Housing is excited to welcome Ms. Karen Watson to the department. She has previoulsy worked on campus in a different area and we are glad that she is back at Appalachian!
Facility Maintenance Technician, University Housing
Phillip Garrow is the new Facility Maintenance Technician in University Housing. He comes to us from a background of facility and residential maintenance.
Phillip really enjoys hunting and being outdoors! We are happy to have him as a part of our team!
Coordinator, Residence Life
Anna McNamara is one of the new Coordinators for Residence Life. She is coming to us from Eastern Washington University. She completed her undergraduate degree from Appalachian State University and her Master's at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.
Anna will oversee one of the residential areas of campus.
Coordinator, Residence Life
Jawoin Williams is another new Coordinator for Residence Life. He is coming to us from Averett University. He completed both of his degrees at Averett University, Bachelor's in Biomedical Science and Master's in Business Administration with a concentration in leadership.
Assistant Director for Communications and Conferences, University Housing
Dr. Amanda Cutchens comes to us from the University of South Florida where she served as a Senior Academic Advisor in the Honors College. Amanda has her doctorate (Ph.D) in Curriculum and Instruction, Higher Education Administration from the University of South Florida. Amanda also earned her master's at USF and undergraduate degree in Public Relations from the University of Florida.
